The transition from the Chest, Middle and cross over into Head register is probably the most talked about subject of modern day singers.
Singers talk about hitting a brick wall when trying to access the next register while singing from lower notes to higher notes (Moving upwards through the scales.)

They feel as if the voice will not move any further without forcing it, or simply singing louder to achieve the required result. They often mention how breathy the voice is while trying to cross registers.

When the larynx is left in one muscular function, it prevents the voice from moving freely through to the next connecting register and allowing the next set of muscles to come into play.

For our voices to move freely through the registers, it requires proper breath support, and relaxation of the tongue, pharynx and the larynx.
If we remain in the chest voice and keep on “belting” notes in he thicker vocal folds, sometimes way beyond our physical capabilities, this is when we run into problems.

Singers often try to make the transition into the next register by increasing muscle pressure and singing louder.

This is quite the opposite to my Voiceology “10 Essential Lessons For easy Singing”
I tell my students “light and easy NOT strong and squeezy.!”

We can only navigate freely and easily between registers by allowing the voice and larynx to become much more relaxed.

The larynx muscles actually need to make the slightest adjustments to every pitch as we are singing through the register changes.

In my opinion, singers who continue to carry register breaks beyond their normal cross over notes, will never, ever have even and controlled tone from bottom to top.

Whatever your break note is, be sure it is always used in the correct register. If you use it and belt it one time, and decide to use it to cross registers the next time, it will always be unstable and breathy!

There is no quick way to achieve this blend, other than Practice! You may have to be patient and compromise in the beginning, but as the experts agree…
“Over time Success not over night!”

I tell all of my students, the people who PUSH you hard and loud for now, will not be around when you are busy stressing over the lack of response in your vocal cords and the hoarse throat and lack of voice you will be suffering.

Till next time,
Happy Singing and Practising.
